Overview
The SoCal VoCals are the premiere a cappella group from the University of Southern California. Since their creation back in 1996 the VoCals have been trying their best to redefine a cappella in a way that can only be done in SoCal. The group is comprised, solely, by current USC students, and prides themselves on singing music from every genre and by any artist. From Jazz to Rock and from Simon and Garfunkel to Vanilla Ice the VoCals only discriminate on taste.
Over the past twelve years, the VoCals have been increasing their exposure to a national level, bringing their brand of band (no instruments; just voices) to performances of all shapes and sizes. It seems like they’ve sung in every imaginable situation, from private parties and weddings to sold-out events at the Staples Center, earning themselves the nickname "party on stage". And while they’re stationed mainly in Southern California, the band has also taken their high-energy act on the road, traveling everywhere from New York City to Anchorage, Alaska.
The only thing that compares in sweetness to seeing the group perform in person is being able to take them home with you. Thankfully, The SoCal VoCals have made that crazy dream a reality by releasing five award-winning studio albums. Their most recent, Get in. ROCK. Get out. was nominated for best a cappella album of the year and featured an award winning solo by David Rakita. Several of their other songs have been included on the Best of College A Cappella (BOCA) and Voices Only compilation CDs as well.
The VoCals also compete in several inter-collegiate a cappella competitions, including the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) and USC’s Absolut A Cappella. In these competitions, they have never failed to reach the semifinals and have received several awards, including best choreography (ICCA ’06, Absolut ’07), best arrangement (ICCA '01, '02, '03, Absolut ’07) and over-all first place (Absolut ’07).
All in all, the SoCal VoCals are a close group of friends who have come together to make some awesome music and have a ton of fun. Go ahead and look around, get to know them. Then, go check them out at one of their upcoming performances.
